This Frock Rocks | The BYU Rule + Blanco on Repeat + Barley + More

THIS FROCK ROCKS; SIX GREAT THINGS SHARED WEEKLY

The BYU Rule: BYU is the only major athletic department in the country that refuses to play on Sunday.   I read a fascinating article about this topic in the Deseret News and I loved. it.   BYU has said that no matter the consequences their athletes will not play on Sunday.   This has always been their practice and it is consistent with the mission of the university.   "The BYU Rule" was instituted in the 1960's and held for over 30 years, it stated that BYU would be accommodated in games and championships if there was Sunday play involved and those competitions would be rescheduled.   Well then the rule was changed, a hard campaign waged to get it back, and it was.   I am not here to comment on NCAA rules and regulations.   I am here to say that standing up for one's beliefs like BYU has done makes that much easier for my family to continue our course of no Sunday play.  We love the Cougars!

Blanco on repeat:  I love white clothing.  In the summer you can't go wrong with a LWD and flirty sandal or white jeans with great top.   I am not revealing something unknown here, merely repeating what I say every time the temperature warms up and I feel summer vibes.  If you have many men living around you like me, then it is best to own many pairs of white jeans because they won't stay clean. Buy them on super discount here, or keep a bleach pen handy.  You should probably stock up on white tees too because if isn't a fresh looking than the whole white thing because a dingy griege thing and that isn't what I am talking about here.

Barley: I have 200 pounds of barley in the garage because I like to stay stocked up on supplies.  However, it is getting a bit excessive so I am working on some great recipes to use it up.  This weekend for Sunday supper with my dad I made a toasted barley salad with mixed greens and a couple of varieties of cherries.   Some other delicious barley recipes are made here with broccoli, and here as a risotto.

Toasted Barley Salad with Cherries

INGREDIENTS

1 cup toasted, cooked barley, chilled

4 cups spring mix

1 cup fresh cherries, halved

1/2 + dried Montmorency cherries

1 cup snap peas, quartered

1 tablespoon sherry vinegar

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon garlic, minced

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

freshly ground black pepper

3 tablespoons chopped basil

1/2 cup fine blue cheese, crumbled

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine all salad ingredients into a large bowl.

In a small bowl, whisk together the sherry vinegar, olive oil and garlic. Drizzle over the salad, season with the salt and pepper to taste, and toss. Add the blue cheese and gently mix again.

* Do not add nuts.   Toasted Barley has a yummy nutty flavor

Gigi: The Gigi sandal by Sam Edelman is the simplest yet most genius of all sandals.   It is the right amount of sandal without being too strappy nor too skimpy (think skinny binding cords and cry).   The Gigi comes in a million colors and every single one of them has a use.   If you don't own a Gigi you could start now with a few of the colors on sale at Nordstrom for less than $50, the newest shades and basics , and the dressed up crystal version.  For those of you with daughters (not me) Sam Edelman makes a toddler and girly-sized versions too!

Tomatoes: I am in awe of the multiplicity of tomato breeds that come to their peak in the summer.   Instagram is all about tomato rainbows right now.   I loved the Smitten Kitchen's recipe for slow roasted tomatoes, and there a so many more to try after you get that one mastered.

#SecretMancation: We are less than a week away from our Summer 2016 vacation, or rather "Mancation" because the entire entourage is male except for me, and I try to make the itinerary male-oriented so that the MEN have a good time.  I have continued to give out clues on my social media and there are many good guesses.   My boys think they have it all figured out as Switzerland.   I had to share the picture of my son Dieter when he was 2 on the London Eye.   He was really afraid and didn't like it at all but he looks so cute to me.
