The husband and I took a getaway a few weeks ago. We were burned out and I threatened to walk off the job (the driving kids, making dinner, a million school events, handling it job), so we booked a trip to Kauai and escaped all.
WHERE: The St. Regis Princeville Resort is a laid-back luxe, just like I want my vacations. The service staff was the kindest and most genuine of any hotel I have ever stayed at. I felt as if I was with friends. I travelled at the shoulder-season so the hotel wasn't crowded, but rather felt intimate and of a more boutique vein. The view over Hanalei Bay was stunning, absolutely stunning. It rains every day in Kauai for at least a few hours and that did nothing to dampen the beauty of this peaceful corner of the island.
Our activities included kayaking and snorkeling off the hotel beach, hiking at Waimea Canyon, a 4-mile run at a mahogany plantation, shave ice, poke bowls, and lying around. Nearby dining options are fantastic: Sushi Girl Kauai for sushi burritos, Pono Market for poke bowls and fried chicken, Lappert's for ice cream, Hee Fat General Store for shave ice, The Dolphin for teriyaki ahi and ice cream pie, The Eating House for ramen bowls and other incredible eats.
WEAR: I went to Kauai over Memorial Day Weekend and sorted my wardrobe palette around this holiday adding red and blue to my usual black, white, and nude. I also had a brand new fringy clutch with deep blue and black embroidery that I want to use for most occasions. Flats are better for Kauai than heels as it is very relaxed there. A mix of dresses and cover-ups was the right formula for the island, it is nice to toss on something lovely over swimwear in case of an ice cream run or visit a scenic beach. Keeping the makeup simple, jewelry simpler, and having travel-size toiletries on the ready was the answer to having more fun with less effort.
