Back-to-School 2015

Back-to-School 2015

Back-to-School Photos: We take 1000 pictures for back-to-school.   We take them of each of the kids, group photos, and a couple of silly pics.   We try to a photo like the one above with everyone in the same spot {or close to it} so that we can track how big my kids are getting.   I now have two taller than me (6'3" and 5'11") with two more on the way.   It is the best of times for me to see my young men growing up to be the smart, strong, witty, and loyal sons that they are.

A Berry and Oat Porridge:  One of our longest-held family tradition for the start of the school year is the Back-to-School Breakfast.    I have a few standard offerings like cinnamon rolls and crispy heart bacon.  I also try to add in a few new ideas too.   This year I made Winter Berry Chia Oat Breakfast . I took the recipe below for one, and made it into a huge pot of warm coconut-cinammon scented oats.  It was delicious, bright, and a healthy start to the school year.   HOWEVER, it never made it to the table.   My kids plowed through the rolls and bacon, and then their grandparents showed up with DONUTS!   Well, the good news is that there is a ton left over for breakfasts through out the week.

Winter Berry Chia Oat Breakfast

3 oz of gluten free oats

Handful of raisins

Teaspoon of cinnamon

Small handful of almonds

Sprinkling of pumpkin and sunflower seeds

Handful of winter berries

Drizzle of maple syrup

1 cup coconut milk

1 cup of water (add more if you like)

Warm the coconut milk and water in a pan. Add the oats and stir while warming gently. Add the raisins, almonds and cinnamon and continue stirring for 5 to 10 minutes.

Spoon the porridge into a dish, heap two tablespoons of chia jam on top, add your berries, a drizzle of maple syrup and sprinkling of seeds. Warming, delicious and healthy!

GET ON MY FORK:  I spend a significant amount of time talking about, shopping for, preparing, and serving food.   Even if I wasn't a foodie or interested in cooking, my kids and their insatiable hunger would still send me scrambling to make a meal.   Last week I was out with my husband on date night and we received the text message shown above.   Someone was home and was starving to death.   #FeedingMen is one of my most important, if not favorite jobs.  It is good to be needed.

Gladiator Sandals: Back-to-School time means new clothes and a seasonal change to the wardrobe.   Well, it is going to warm for a while yet in some parts of the country and more specifically where I live.   It should also be mentioned that since I am obsessed with gladiator sandals I will not be giving up on them this Fall.   Rather I am going to be working them into much of my transitional wardrobe and putting them into my client collections

Adrienne's Pizzabar:  Returning to school has taken us straight out of the summer party (but not SANDALS) and plopped us into routines, sports, and seminary.   Even though we aren't free to travel and explore now, we have all of our memories from our incredible summer. One thing my family talks about still is the pizza at Adrienne's Pizzabar in Manhattan.   We ate their on our #MancationNYC in July.   Adrienne's serves their pizza on a baking sheet family style.   They say it can serve 2-3 but my family would have preferred one each. *

This is the best pizza I have ever had in my whole life. I want to have this pizza every day. I can’t believe that someone makes pizza like this. I don’t think I will ever have a pizza as good as Adrienne’s again.
